Welcome to the Videojug Soccer School, brought to you in association with the Brazilian Soccer Schools. In this film we show you some drills to improve your defending.

Jockeying is the defensive technique of containing the attacker and creating a situation with is advantageous to you. It means you hold the attacker in position until it is the right time and position to make the tackle. Don't get too close to the defender, get ‘touch close' – about an arms length away so you can put pressure on the attacker.

Stand at a 45 degree angle to the attacker. This will allow you to turn easier. If you are too square on it will be harder to turn quickly. Also if you are too close the defender will be able to turn you easily.

Step 1: Drill 1

In pairs one player has the ball and the other tries to jockey the player so that they have the ball on their weaker foot and then try and shake them off the ball or make a tackle. Take it in turns having the ball and jockeying.

Step 2: Drill 2

This drill works with three players. Player one passes the ball to a receiver, the receiver should try an turn the defender. The defender should try and jockey the receiver away from the goal or onto his weaker foot. Don't get too close or you'll get turned. Swap over after five goes.
