Junior Tennis: Top Tips
Frances Ribeiro, Spanish tennis coach and world class player, shares with VideoJug users his top tips for teaching Junior Tennis. From watching the ball, to making contact with it, this Video is perfect for all those wishing to teach their children tennis, in a challenging, yet fun way.
Step 1: Enjoy
To learn tennis, children need to have fun. Games are often the best way for them to enjoy themselves and learn at the same time.
We recommend a game for children where they have to stay within the sidelines.
Otherwise they lose lives!
Sounds simple, but it's not so easy when someone is hitting tennis balls at you! And if a ball hits you, you lose another life.
This game helps children keep their eye on the ball at the same time as coordinating their feet.
They can have a great time, without even realising this will improve their tennis!
Step 2: Watch the ball
Watching the ball is the most important thing to learn in tennis, and yet it's the easiest thing to forget.
To help your child remember to keep their eye on the ball, you can write their initial on the ball with a marker pen. Tell them to look at it when trying to hit the ball. Having their initial on the ball makes it theirs and increases focus.
Step 3: Contact
Making contact with the ball is not as easy as it sounds.
To help children improve this, you can ask them to take a position on the service line.
Then help them with the movement of a stroke. You can start with the forehand.
The racket starts low and swings through high.
The children should practice hitting their own ball and then they run and get it.
They can practice the movement of the stroke again. They have to hit through the swing.
Praise them when their racket makes contact with the ball.
