Doing the splits requires a lot of flexibility, but you can learn how to do it by stretching the correct muscles. In this step by step guide James McGranaghan, managing director of J'amies Gymnastics Academy, shows you how to work up to the splits.
Top Tips
- The first thing you need to do is stretch your ham strings. You can do this by stretching down and touching the floor with straight legs.
- Sit down with your legs straight out in front of you. Stretch your arms as far forward as possible, trying to touch your nose to your knees.
- Get into the lunge position, similar to the way a sprinter would start a race. From here you can straighten your front leg and move down into the splits.
