Lip Piercings: General Care

Got a new labret lip piercing? Here's your essential aftercare guide to cleaning and caring for your new lip jewelry.

Step 1: Getting pierced

Have a chat with your piercer to ensure they have a lot of knowledge about piercing and aftercare. Check to see their room is clean, and take a look through their portfolio.

Step 2: The healing period

It can take between 3 to 4 months for your piercing to heal, although the jewelry can be downsized and changed after the first month. During this time remember it's very important to keep the area clean.

Expect a bit of swelling in the first few days. You can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory, or suck on ice chips, to help reduce the discomfort.

Step 3: Cleaning the inside of your mouth

Rinse you mouth out 4 to 5 times a day with a saline solution made from a quarter teaspoon of rock salt in half a pint of boiling water left to cool. Use this after each time you eat drink or smoke.

Buy a new soft bristled toothbrush and clean your teeth after every meal.

Step 4: Cleaning the outer piercing

Always, always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your new lip piercing.

Clean your piercing with a cotton bud dipped into your saline solution. Use a fresh cotton bud each time you dip. Finally dry the area, again with a clean cotton bud.

Step 5: What to avoid

Resist the temptation to constantly fiddle or play with your new piercing, and that includes clicking it against your teeth.

Stay away from highly acidic foods and drinks. Avoid excessive alcohol or oral contact. Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol in the first 24 hours after getting any new mouth piercing

Step 6: Care Tips

Make sure your jewelry is tightened at all times.

If you suspect you have an infection carry on cleaning your piercing and contact your piercing immediately for advice.

So, a bit of patience, a lot of saline solution and a little care and your piercing is in very good hands.
