London: Daunt Books

Daunt Books is the oldest purpose built bookshop in the UK. With original Edwardian features and a unique collection of books, Daunt Books is truly one of London's Secrets.

Step 1: What's the big secret?

A treasure trove for literature-loving travellers, Daunt Books is an historic, three-dimensional encyclopaedia of the world. Step over the threshold of the only purpose-built bookshop in Britain and find yourself transported back in time by its beautiful Edwardian architecture and rows of original oak shelves. During a visit, it's worth exploring the extent of the shop. A short staircase leads up to evocative wooden balconies overlooking the ground floor. The entire upper level of the shop is naturally lit by vast, graceful skylights. The collection also extends downstairs into a cosy basement.

Step 2: What's on offer?

Daunt's vast collection of books is hand picked by the shop's discerning staff, and arranged uniquely by geography rather than genre. So you want to know about Russia? In Daunt's you'll find fiction, history, travel and politics nestling comfortably next to one another, giving you the opportunity to discover hidden gems and surprising cross-references.

Daunt Books regularly hosts talks on a range of subject matters, most often in the form of discussion between authors of complimentary works. Hosted in the shop itself, these relaxed, informal events can accommodate an audience of up to 150 and are a great opportunity to meet other book-lovers over a glass of wine or two. Tickets are £5, with wine included. Visit their website, www.dauntbooks.co.uk for details of forthcoming talks.

Step 3: Where is it?

Daunt Books can be found at 83 Marylebone High Street, in central London. The nearest tube station is Bond Street. Other Daunt bookshops can also be found in Belsize Park, Hampstead and Holland Park.
