London: The Prospect Of Whitby Pub
Videojug visits one of London's oldest and famous riverside pubs, the Prospect of Whitby. Dated back to 1543, it is a simple tavern with old-fashioned interior. Why not try a lovely ale within this lively pub.
Step 1: Why's it so good?
The Prospect of Whitby is one of London's most famous pubs, and the oldest on the riverside. There's been a pub on the site since 1543. In the seventeenth century, it was notorious as a meeting place for smugglers and villains. It's most infamous regular was Judge John Jeffries, the 'Hanging Judge' whose victims were chained up in the river at low tide and left there while several tides washed over them. A hangman's noose swings over the Thames outside the pub as a reminder of it's grisly past.
Step 2: What's on offer?
The whole pub is steeped in maritime history. The main bar is built of old ships' masts and timber beams - and the nautical theme is continued with the bar memorabilia. There's a restaurant and bar upstairs with creaking floorboards and atmospheric wood-panelled rooms . And of course, there's the riverside view. At low tide it's possible to walk down onto the pebbled beach.
Step 3: Where is it?
The Prospect of Whitby is located at 37 Wapping Wall,
London about 10 minutes walk from Wapping Underground Station, which is on the East London Line.
