Choose the perfect shade of foundation for your skin tone with our tips from make-up artist Jo Reid. Choose the perfect shade of foundation for your skin tone with our tips from make-up artist Jo Reid.

Yellow-based foundations should be applied to yellow-based skin tones, which tan in the sun.

Pink-based foundations should be applied to pink-based skin tones, which burn in the sun.

The foundation is the correct shade if you blend it into the skin and it disappears.

Hold your arm up to your face to see if it matches the skin tone of your body.

Wow, useless doesn't even begin to describe this. This did not help me figure out how to choose the right foundation. And it's not true that people with pink toned skin don't tan! I always get quite dark.

I suggest testing the foundation on a larger area than what is shown in the video. Try drawing a stripe from the mid cheek down to the jawline and also test it on your forehead. Unlike the model, many of us suffer from uneven skintone (which is why we need foundation in the first place) so there is no point testing it on only a tiny area as the skin near your jawline might be lighter or darker than the skin elsewhere. Check it in natural light to see if it's a good match. I'm surprised she didn't mention that. She did not explain undertones very well either. They aren't always strictly yellow or pink either, some skintones can have red or blue/red undertones.
