Step 1:

Preparation

Hi. I'm George Berry, the Wood Guy. Lately, I've got a lot of questions from viewers about making chessboards, and they all seem to start off by cutting out little squares of wood like this and trying to put them together.

Step 2:
-
Technique
-
The problem with that is, it's pretty hard to cut 64 squares that are exactly the same. Secondly, if you could cut 64 squares that were exactly the same, how could you put the glue on 64 squares without the first square being dry by the time you got to the last square, and even if you could then you put them together, you can't keep them in register, it's hard to clamp them together.

Step 3:
-
Cutting
-
So the trick in making a chessboard is you never start with little blocks of wood. You start with strips of wood, and you glue strips of wood together until you have something like this. So you have strips of wood glued together. Then you take it to the saw, and you cut, cross-cut them. Now once they're all cut up, all you have to do is turn every other one around.

Step 4:
-
Finishing
-
Make sure you put plenty of glue on here, because you'd be gluing in-grain to in-grain, if it soaks it up it wouldn't hurt to put the glue on there twice. And once it's, once you have it all glued back together again, there's your chessboard. If you have any questions or you want to see more tricks, visit me on my website, WoodGuy.com.
