Martial Arts: The Roundhouse Kick
The Roundhouse kick is one of the most visually impressive martial arts manoeuvres. Follow our expert black-belt Steve Mortimore's step by step guide and learn how to perfect yours.
Step 1: You will need
Step 2: The Stance
Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and taking a step back with your right foot to a comfortable distance, as if on tram lines. Then turn your feet 30º and bend your knees. Remember to keep your feet firmly on the ground.
This platform will allow you to draw your energy up from the ground. The energy should then flow through your body and be released into your target via the kick.
A strong stance is an absolute must for a good kick as you need to have a stable platform from which to launch it.
Step 3: The Kick
Propel the knee forward by using your toes and heel like a spring. Once the knee points at the target, snap the leg forward from the knee.
You can give the kick power by rotating your hip and your support leg.
Strike the target with the top or bony part of the foot. For strikes to the neck or thigh, you can use the instep with toes pointed down.
Practice your kicks low until you perfect them before you attempt the higher kicks.
Step 4: Breathing
Measured breathing and the exhalation of your energy will improve your kicking technique. Exhale throughout the entire execution of the kick. And make your exhalation strong and powerful, from your abdomen. This is called the ”KI-AI”.
Step 5: Review
The rotation of the hips with the roundhouse kick turns the body toward the attacker. But always try to remain upright and avoid leaning back or to the side.
Keep your guard up as you kick to protect your head against a counter-attack.
Tips & Comments
This is probably one of the weakest roundhouse kicks I've ever seen. There's almost zero hip rotation and the foot isn't turning were the heel points at the opponent. Here's a much better tutorial. http://bit.ly/9sXUXF
This is one of my best kicks...........
i like how easy and clear this video explains
everyone is an expert when criticising someone who has the cahones to do something. Let us see your film clip of you and simply state, see me.. go compare.
oh and using the ball of the foot puts all of the force into a small area while doing this kick
The supporting foot should remain flat on the ground turning while performing the kick, the knee should come out to the side of the person( at least 90 degrees) performing the kick and go into the target from the same angle. It should also follow through with a snap using your hips rather than your knees, like flicking a tea towel and hearing that snap.
Disgrace even calling this a roundhouse kick.
Very sloppy roundhouse, should knock opponent back even using a pad.
if you continue too kick pads roundhouse style like that you will damage your back over a period of time due too whats called negative impact force,ie,the energy go back into your body instead of through the target its like punching a piece of wood if you do not follow through it hurts because of the energy transfer
the techniques that are shown on these videos are quite old. There are new techniques that are being taught that are more scientific. It means the it is much faster, stronger and powerful. A simple 180 O rotation of the ankle towards the opponent on impact would create a stronger kick. Also note that the heel should not be dragging the floor once the kick is executed. No offense intended to the producers of this film. They did a good job.I just added my observation. 7th Dan BB
