Mascara Master Class
Celebrity make-up artist Daniel Sandler gives you a mascara master class and shares his top tips for making the most of your eyelashes.
Step 1: You will need
Step 2: Curl your eyelashes
Curl your upper lashes before applying mascara to open up the eye. Lift your upper eyelid and look down. Position the eyelash curler close to the lash line, and squeeze for 5-6 seconds. Use metal rather than plastic curlers but don't heat them beforehand.
Step 3: Choosing mascara
Always wear black mascara, regardless of age or skin tone. If your mascara crumbles easily, try using a waterproof mascara which will be longer lasting.
Step 4: Applying mascara
Apply to the roots of your upper lashes and move upwards in short, jagged motions. A jumbo brush will give a more dramatic effect more quickly, but use a smaller brush if you have shorter lashes. Small brushes are also effective on bottom lashes. If you make a mistake, wipe the area with a cleanser pen or cotton bud. Comb the lashes through from root to tip to remove any lumps so the lashes separate like a petal around the eye.
Tips & Comments
This isn't the way that I put on mascara and I like my way better, so I thought I'd share it. What I do is I get a double-whammy: a volumizing AND a lengthening mascara. Before I put it on, I obviously curl my lashes. I don't think it matters if you do the clamp-and-hold for five seconds or the clamp-and-squeeze 5-10 times method, I just prefer the latter. When that's good and done with, I take my mascara wand and, starting at the very base of the lash (from underneath, I've never seen it applied from on top like in here) and gently wiggle it side to side all the way to the tip of my lashes. I do this from every angle until each lash is coated and standing up straight/slanted, however I want it, and then I repeat this step three more times so that by the end, my eye has three layers of mascara. This not only volumizes and lengthens but it triples the effect and I like to go out with a bang; if you're more of a subtle person, then don't do so much. You can do only single or double coats. If you prefer more, go for it. I then do this for my other eye. I then take a SECOND brand of mascara, doesn't really matter what the second is for since my first gave me my double whammy, and I apply ANOTHER three coats to each eye. Doubling up on mascaras gives an added dramatic look and thickens your eyelashes. I find that if you do this correctly, your eyelashes will actually look fake-- which is what I like (again, if you are subtle, you don't have to do this). If you want MORE, you can either add a THIRD brand of mascara (which isn't necessary) or just go back to the FIRST brand and continue alternating until you have your desired effect. You should be aware that in continuing to build up and up on mascara, your eyelashes will start to stick together and look messy, so try not to go overboard-- you might pass the fabulous look and ruin it all. While my top lashes dry, I take my FIRST mascara and go ahead and lightly brush my bottom lashes. If I'm going for a subtle look, I only use one mascara (three layers) on top and no mascara on the bottom...but I don't usually go for subtle. I go big. The mascaras that I use and absolute love are: FIRST-- Covergirl Pro Waterproof Mascara, SECOND-- Revlon Luxurious Length Mascara (both in black). I don't usually do a third but when I do, it's L'Oreal Voluminous Volume Building Eye Mascara, again, in black. Then I apply my eyeliner, but that's just what I do. =).
I have virtually no eyelashes,so when I go to curl them I often pinch. Not a pleasant feeling.
it seems not effective
not good

pls if your eyelashes r already curled how do u make them straight.
Uh, I don't see a difference betweenthe before and after. I think she's already got a little mascara on.
what mascara is he using?
I use a Clinique primer and then a black Christian Dior mascara that was recommended to me by a co-worker in Vegas (a place where eyelashes can be very important to your customer service). I found the primer cuts my mascara application time in half, and the CD mascara is so luxurious, and even smells good. It's the little things in life!
I agree with the person below me, I am quite fair and use brown mascara during the day, it looks more natural if your eyelashes are fair to begin with. But definatly always black for evening :)
