Mother's Day - What Flowers To Get Your Mum
TV gardener Rachel de Thame gives advice on the right flowers to give your mum on Mother's Day. Follow this short VideoJug guide and your mother will be most impressed with you on Mother's Day.
Speaker: Now Mother's Day is almost upon us so it is time to get down to the florist and buy some flowers for the most important woman in your life. But what should you be buying? Well with me I have Rachel de Thame top TV Gardner and also an expert in the language of flowers. Now first of all Rachel what do you mean by the language of flowers?
Rachel: Well it's something that became extremely popular--particularly with the Victorians--who often needed to say something to someone else and they couldn’t be up front about it. They couldn’t say I love you or I admire you, particularly if you have a chaperone sitting in the corner, you had to be subtle and discreet. So they gave a message to each flower, something that it signified. So for instance, this is gorgeous for Mother’s Day isn’t it because it’s fresh and spring like. The daffodils, they mean regard and they can mean chivalry as well and the gorgeous little lily of the valley because they just signify happiness. So that would be perfect for Mother’s Day.
Rachel: Something maybe a bit more romantic, this would be ideal from your partner or your husband, again roses that are just all about love and a red rose is about that everlasting romantic love. So I’d love to receive those on Mother's Day.
Speaker: Now hold that thought for one moment because flowers are not the only thing you could be getting your mum for Mother's Day. We’ve been speaking to some other mother's and getting their ideas.
Mother1: I’d love to have a lie in and a cup of tea brought to me in bed and also flowers are really good Mother2: Flower’s are always nice but to be taken out to lunch or something would be nice. Mother3: I’d like a scented candle I think but any kind of fragrance would be good.
Speaker: So you’ve heard it there from the experts that have seen Rachel that it’s not just flowers.
Rachel: No it’s not just flowers. In fact, it’s very interesting that one of those mothers picked up on fragrance because of course that’s partly what we love about flowers and I’ve been working with Tesco under the finest banner to create a fragrance range. Not only the fragrance part. But bath products, body lotions, and wonderful scented candles, it’s all about pampering and making you feel good, which would be perfect for Mother’s Day.
Speaker: Now any other examples of what we can get mum?
Rachel: Coming back I think that in the language of flowers. This is another suggestion. This is an orchid. Now in the language of flowers; that stands for longevity and elegance. Now the elegance is obvious but they just last so long in your home so I think that would be a really good choice.
Speaker: Rachel, Thank you very much indeed. So you’ve heard all the advice. Whatever you do don’t do what I did last year and get your mother a cactus. It doesn’t work out very well at all. Goodbye.
