Pet First Aid

Medical emergencies are bound to happen, the best thing that you can do is be prepared and know about how to give first aid care to your pet. This video will show you important references to have handy just in case, as well as how to deal with some of the most common issued like how to administer the Heimlich maneuver on your dog if he begins to choke. There are no ambulances for pets so it’s best to be in the know about pet first aid.

Step 1:
-
Learn pet first aid.
-
If a friend or family member becomes seriously ill, we know to call 911. But, there's no medical response units for our very own pets. As a pet owner, you are the only one they can turn to in a medical emergency. This is why it's essential for any pet owner to learn the basics of pet first aid.

Step 2:
-
The double thrust.
-
Choking is the most common emergency in households. And you can definitely save your pet's life by doing a double thrust. So, Marsha, your larger pet here he starts to choke, and there's a lot more dangers in doing this type of procedure, I guess on a larger pet.
-
Step 3:
-
For a larger pet:
-
What should we do in a larger pet? If you have a medium size animal, you might be able to put them on a table. And you want to place your fist underneath their rib cage. And you want to push in and up, in and up, in and up towards the rib cage. You're going to continue doing the abdominal thrust, until the object comes out and is ejected, or until the animal loses consciousness. Let me try this. I make a fist. OK. I apply just below his rib cage, underneath here, apply my other hand over top, and I actually push up and forward. Yes. Up and forward, about an inch. Yes. And that should help him expel the gas, or the wind that will help him expel the object. Is that correct? Correct.

Step 4:
-
Be prepared.
-
Never give your dog a toy to play with that can fit entirely inside your dog's mouth. Your dog should only be able to chew on a portion of the toy. For a complete listing of pet first aid tips, and to find out how to sign up for a pet first aid class, check out redcross.org.
