Pool Safety
If a dog accidentally falls into a pool, it can turn into a dangerous situation very quickly, as seen in this film. But allowing your dog to run free in the backyard can be a great source of exercise, so just keep them safe.
Step 1: Your Dog And The Pool
If a dog accidentally falls into a pool it can be tough for them to get out on their own. Smaller dogs can't use the stairs, and pool ladders are useless as dogs can't climb up them. If a dog walks out onto a solar blanket or vinyl cover, they can be trapped in it or drown. A pet who has fallen into the pool will get fatigued quickly, and will usually try to get out at the same spot over and over again, making him even more tired. Fortunately, there are some products that will keep your pet safe.
Step 2: The Skamper Ramp
One pet safety device that every pool owner should have is called the "Skamper Ramp". What it does is allow the dog to get out there easily as it has little holes that they can grip with their paws, and walk right out of the pool. The "Skamper Ramp" will run you about fifty bucks, and takes you a few minutes to install.
Step 3: The Safety Turtle
The "Safety Turtle" has been used to protect children for years. Now, it has found it's way to the pet market. Your dog wears a special collar that sends out an alert when it gets wet. If your pet falls into the pool, the indoor base unit sounds an alarm the moment your dog touches the water. The only problem is that you have to be around it to hear it. A lot of the people who have a screen enclosure like to let their dogs run in the fresh air, so the "Safety Turtle" just gives them a little more piece of mind.
Step 4: Exercising Your Dog In The Pool
If you have an older dog like Buddy, and still want to give a low impact workout, put him in a pet life preserver. You can get them at most pet and marine supply stores. Swimming in the pool is great exercise and a lot of fun for your dog. Just remember to stay safe. For the Pet Report - I'm Mitch Wilder.
