Puppy Mills And Pet Stores
Where should you buy your pet? Is that pet store or pet shop the safest place? They may get their dogs from puppy mills, which can be harsh and unsanitary. The breeding dogs are forced into cages for life. These types of conditions can often lead to poor health and temperament of the dogs. These dogs are transported dangerously by truck, and have not been socialized. Better options are a licensed breeder, or the pound. Breeders will only sell directly to the public and adopting a dog can help save a life.

Step 1:
-
Local Pet Stores
-
For many people thinking of getting a pet, the local pet store is an obvious starting point. They are easy to find; often in busy strip malls, but there are some things you should know before heading out to pick up your little bundle of joy.
I would discourage anyone from buying from a pet shop. Most pet store puppies come from large breeding mill facilities. Thousands of dogs are kept in harsh and unsanitary conditions. Breeding dogs are forced to live their entire life in cages. Because of these conditions, the puppy’s health and temperament are always in question.

Step 2:
-
Transportation
-
Puppies produced by these mills are often transported to these pet stores in tractor trailers where some actually die in transport.
-
Step 3:
-
Social Problems
-
A problem with pet stores is the dogs are not used to humans, and they are very scared. They have all kinds of problems when the person takes it home. They're not socialized, they will go into a corner and hide.

Step 4:

Solution
-
So where can you get a puppy and still have a clear conscience? Well, you can try a licensed hobby breeder, like this one right here; or you can go to the pound and rescue a puppy. Legitimate breeders will only sell direct to the public to ensure a good home for their animals. You can also save some money by buying directly from a breeder.
If you really want to do the right thing, go to your local shelter and adopt an animal. By adopting you can reduce the demand for new puppies, and you could save a dog's life.
Next time on the "Pet Report" we will tell you about some amazing dogs you can get at the local pound.
