Quickstep - Twists And Turns

Learn some key moves to jazz up the standard steps of the Quickstep and add that all important extra energy to this already very lively dance. Learn how to do the twists and turns connected to the quickstep.

Step 1:

Starting steps for the leader

Start facing diagonally to a wall.

From here, step forwards onto your right foot, outside of your partner, then side onto the left taking a quarter turn, close the right in, step back onto the left and lock your legs in this position.

Now try the steps a little faster. Front right, side left, close right, back left and hold.

Step 2:

Starting steps for the follower

To begin - step back onto your left foot, then side onto the right taking a quarter turn, close the left foot in and step forwards onto the right foot.

Now try the steps a little faster. Back left, side right, close left, front right.

Step 3:

The leader's turn

Return to the position you finished in before, with your right foot forwards and weight on the left foot.

Now holding your legs in this position, take a quarter turn to the right and replace the weight onto the right foot. Then take a half turn continuing to the right and replace your weight back onto the left foot.

Now have a go at speeding the steps up a little. Turn replace right, turn replace left.

A quick tip to perfect this: try putting a piece of paper between your legs and dancing the steps without losing the paper!

It demonstrates just how close you need to keep your legs together to achieve the correct turn.

Step 4:

The follower's turn

So, starting with your right leg forwards - step side onto the left foot, then pivot round brushing the right foot in and step forward onto it.

Now try the steps a little faster. Turn and brush forward.

Step 5:

The leader's basic steps to finish

So starting with your left foot back - Step back onto the right foot, then side onto the left taking a quarter turn, close the right foot in and step side onto the left.

From here you could begin the whole sequence again or start with our basic steps.

Now try the sequence a little faster. Back right, side left, close right and side left.

Step 6:

The follower's basic steps to finish

Begin with your weight on the right foot forward - From here step forwards onto your left foot, side onto the right, close the left foot in and step side onto the right - and you're ready to start again.

Try the steps a little faster. Front left, side right, close left and side right.
