Shielding The Ball

Welcome to the Videojug Soccer School, brought to you in association with the Brazilian Soccer Schools. In this film we show you some drills to improve your defending.
-
When you have got the ball it is very important to keep possession. A defender will be eager to get the ball from you and it is important that you use your body to stop them. You should always try and keep as much of your body in between you and your opponent as you can. If the opponent is on your right hand side use your left foot, if he's on your right side use your left foot. Keep the distance between your legs large so it's harder for your opponent to get the ball.
-
Get into pairs. One player should simply try and retain possession of the ball by moving around an area. Focus on keeping the ball on the opposite side to the defender by using both feet. Use your body weight to keep him at bay.
-
Stay in pairs but this time the player with the ball should try and keep his movement to a minimum. Just focus on shielding the ball rather than moving away from the player.
-
This drill uses three players. You are still trying to shield the ball from a defender but this time get a partner to pass the ball to you first. Receive the ball and don't let the defender get it off you, if he gets too close try too close try and turn past him.
