Hi, my name's Luke, and I'm a member of the Snow Centre Hemel Hempstead team. My history in skiing is, I started off with a very strong race background, then moved onto freestyle. Freestyle is what I love to do - hit the big tricks, learn something new every time, and have a good ride.

Today I'm going to teach you how to do a very simple grind. Important things to learn about grinds. You've got to make sure that there's no one around the box or the rail that you want to hit.

I definitely recommend learning on boxes, as opposed to rails. They're a lot easier, and you don't have to balance quite as much. Important things about coming up to a rail or a box.

When you come up to it, make sure you are ready to pop. Don't ever just ride onto the box. What you want to do is ride up and pop, so you're actually lifting your skis off of the floor.

This will flatten out your skis, and it will help with your landing. If you don't pop, what will usually happen is you'll land on an edge, sparks will go flying, and you're going to bail. Once you've turned, so you've popped, you've turned, you want your upper body to be looking the way that you're going down the hill.

This is going to keep your upper body nice and stable. It's going to help that your edges are going to be flat, otherwise you're going to be on an edge. And you're going to want to have about equal pressure over both skis.

If so, you want just a little bit more in the front, to allow you to move around with the back ski, if you want to do any other rail tricks. Okay, coming off. Coming off is very simple.

You do it pretty much the same way you come onto it. You're still looking down. This is setting your body position up for your landing, you're already facing the right way.

So all you need to do is jump, your upper body will basically pull around your lower body, so you spin your hips a little bit. Because your upper body is already facing down the hill, your legs will automatically want to turn down. So you ride out, make sure there's no one around, do a little bit of a celebration, and there you go, there's your grind.
