Step 1: The cut

Just because you are a man, doesn't mean you shouldn't take pride in your hair, so don't be afraid to go to a proper salon, rather than a barbers. You'll get a great cut, that suits you and your life style rather than a generic 'back and sides'.

Step 2: Product

When you have your hair cut, make sure you enquire what product the hairdresser is using and how you can replicate the look at home. Whether you are after a gelled wet look, or stylish hold and shape with a pomade, your hairdresser will find the right product for you

Step 3: Short and messy

Wash your hair and towel dry it. Skip the comb, and head straight for the styling wax. Work it into your fingers and rub them all over the dry hair. This will create a messy yet controlled look which works best on coarse hair, or hair that has been texturized with a razor when cut.

Step 4: Bed Head

If you are after the 'just got out of bed' look, try showering and applying your products before hitting the sack. This will give you genuine bed head style with no effort when you get up, although you may wish to bring the more wild parts under control with a dash of water and wax. Just make sure you keep your hair dry if you shower in the morning.

Step 5: The smart look

When you need to smarten up apply some mousse or pomade when your hair is dry. Part to one side, and neatly comb it back. This works particularly well if you have a slight wave in your hair, and portrays a tailored, well groomed look. Afterwards, just ruffle your hair to return straight to a fun, tousled look.
