Surfing : Bottom Turn
Surfing : Bottom Turn. Our surf expert will take you through a series of beginner and advanced manoeuvres that will have you looking like a true pro in no time. This time: The all important Bottom Turn.
-
Once you have managed to stand up on your board and ride it down the wave's face, you now need to learn the bottom turn: turning at the bottom of the wave to keep you going in the direction of the barrel, giving you that all essential speed and projection for your next manoeuvre.
-
Step 1:
-
The direction of the wave
-
Before you attempt your bottom turn, you will need to know which direction the wave is breaking because this will determine if you turn left or right.
-
For example, if the wave is breaking to the left, you'll want to turn left. If the wave is breaking to the right, it's vice versa.
-
Step 2:
-
Body weight
-
The crucial aspect of a good bottom turn is being able to shift your bodyweight correctly.
-
Start by adopting the standard surfing stance. As always, this is upright, with your knees bent.
-
Then, adjust your position so that most of your weight is on your back leg and make sure your back leg is a little more bent than the front leg. Turn your upper body - arms and shoulders - swinging them in the direction you intend to travel. This should feel like a natural body movement.
-
Step 3:
-
Timing
-
Timing is of the essence. A good bottom turn can last just a fraction of a second but get it right and you'll avoid skimming out into the flats.
-
Use these steps every time you need to turn at the bottom of the wave and set yourself up for your next move.
