Surfing : The Cutback

Our expert surfer takes you through this key manoeuvre that is the all important Cutback. Learn how to master it properly with VideoJug's help and you'll soon be surfing like a professional.

The cutback keeps the surfer within the wave's power. Put simply, your aim is to guide the board back towards the breaking whitewater section of a wave. This not only extends your ride time, but helps you gain speed and maneuverability.

Step 1:

Speed

As with all of Suring moves, speed is the key. Riding high up near the lip or crest and then quickly veering downward creates masses of power for your next move.
The cutback actually begins at the bottom of the wave as you approach the shoulder. You must veer off from the bottom of the wave, paying special attention not to lose any speed.

Step 2:

Direction

Always keep your eyes on where you want to change direction to. You don't want to make your turn too early when the wave is too vertical, but you also don't want to glide too far out beyond the shoulder where the wave is too flat to push you back into the white water.

Step 3:

Body weight

As you lift from your bottom turn, centre your weight over the centre of the board and lean away from the wave face and back towards the breaking wave.
You must keep most of your weight and body over the midpoint of your board at all times

Step 4:

The turn

Just as you feel the friction of the water grabbing your momentum, begin your turn. Push down on your heels and lift the balls of your feet, thus submerging a small portion your inside rail to give added traction and avoid spinning out.
As your board changes direction, so must you! Never forget that where your eyes look, your board will follow.

Step 5:

Re-position

Once you've completed your turn and the nose of your board is pointed toward the oncoming white water, re-position yourself with a turn back in the direction the wave is breaking and prepare for your next move.
