The "lip" is the highest point of the wave just before it breaks by either crumbling or tubing. Hitting or bashing the lip can also be termed a "re-entry", "straight up", or “off the lip”.
Step 1:
The first thing you have to crack is the set up…
You should be eyeing up you target zone just as you get into your bottom turn. Look down the line and keep your eye focused on the spot you think will be standing tall – or most vertical- and pitching out just as you approach it.
As with all manoeuvres in surfing, speed is of utmost concern since it dictates how smoothly and powerfully you'll complete your move.
Step 2:
The move: Remember, hitting the lip should be flowing and controlled. Just as you approach your target zone - about midway up the face of the wave - put more weight on your back foot so you can pivot your board from side to side like a windscreen wiper.
With your tail weighted correctly, swing your bodyweight, led by your shoulders and upper body, 180 degrees until the nose is pointing back down the wave.
The key is to keep your speed and rotate smoothly.
Step 3:
To review: Plan ahead and keep your eye on the vertical section you want to hit, generate as much speed as possible, use your back foot weight to pivot your board. If everything goes as planned, the next time you surf you should find yourself facing down the wave getting ready for your next move.
