TaeKwon-Do: Jumping Side Kick Break
VideoJug has enlisted the help of European champion Taekwondo Black Belt Dans to show you how to perform The Side Kick Break Jumping Over Obstacles. This is a hard move to master, but with VideoJug's help you'll be perfect in no time.
Step 1: Preparation
With the jumping side kick, the weapon of attack is the heel. Make sure you keep the angle between the foot and ankle at 90 degrees and the target should be struck with a straight leg.
Begin by running and jumping over just one obstacle - focusing all the time on striking the precise point of your target - in this case a training hand mitt.
Gradually add more obstacles and thus lengthening the distance to your target until you reach your comfortable long jump maximum.
Step 2: Practice
You really have to make sure that you're well versed in the basics of breaking with a kick. You could do worse than looking at Videojug's other guides to board breaking elsewhere on the site.
And working on your basic breaking skills with plastic training boards like these that you can break as many times as you like, will always benefit you immensely.
Step 3: The break
Arrange your obstacles into the required position. You can attempt to jump over five of your fellow students before breaking the board with a powerful side kick.
Set the board to the appropriate height. Level with the solar plexus is best because this is where your energy comes from. The person holding the board should grip it tight and be ready to absorb some of the impact with his arms and upper body.
Start from the ready position, where you need to begin activating your total concentration.
Now measure your distance to the target by doing a test run and jump.
Return to the ready position one final time and focus your concentration on your small target area. This should be just a few centimetres squared.
Now combine your focus, concentration and speed to break the board.
