Tennis: The Passing Shot
VideoJug's tennis expert Fabián "Fab" Nuñez Seixa describes to users how to play a winning passing shot. Let VideoJug help you master this winning tennis manoeuvre.
Step 1: Take your position
After your opponent's shot, you know two things: First, that they have played an approach shot and will come in to the net. Second, you know where the ball is going.
Step 2: Choose where to place your shot
The best choice of angle for a passing shot depends on your opponent's position - always look for the less protected side.
If your opponent is close to the net, they will be well placed to cover any shot across them, so you will usually find more space along the line.
If they are further back, you can choose between going down the line or across the court.
Keep your eyes on the ball, and use your peripheral vision to check your opponent's position.
Step 3: The shot
Play using either the forehand technique described in our video "the forehand", or a backhand, as in “the one-handed backhand grip".
In either case, start by turning your body to the side, in line with the ball, and swing your racquet to hit the ball as it passes the line of your body.
As in any other shot, keep your mind and eyes focused on the ball, not on your opponent.
And one last important tip: relax in the swing and try not to hurry your shot, and you will be 80% of the way to success.
