A series developed to explain the basics of Squash playing. In this part, a video showing the development of modern Squash racquets.
Hi, my name is Bob Jaffe. I'm the the director of coaching at Dulwich Squash Club in London. We are one of the top twenty clubs
in the country, and a current Kent champion for a third year running.
We cater for all levels of ability, from our world rank players, right down to beginner level. I'm going to talk to you about the equipment you are going to need, the etiquette you are going to use on court, and the sort of shots that you are going to need to play, and how you are going to play them. Until recently racquets were constructed of laminated wood.
In the 1980's a raw change came in that allowed other composite materials to be used, such as kevlar, boron, and various other materials. This made a big change to how racquets were designed. Also the head size was increased allowing for a lighter more powerful product, which certainly helped many players improve their overall performance.
Racquets these days, as you can see, are of various sorts. This is the Prince Rage that are sponsored with at Dulwich Squash Club. They have a power ring which is a unique design exclusively to Prince, and this gives them a very large sweet spot.
They are also extremely comfortable to play with.
