USB Headset Hack

Turn your USB headset into an input for a guitar, pro mic, keyboards, or other instruments or devices for recording high quality sound!

Step 1: USB Device

Here’s a very inexpensive and quick hack that will turn your USB headset into a digital sound input device that allows you to connect to a guitar, bass, keyboard, and some microphones. Just like the professional USB recording devices that cost one hundred dollars or more.

Step 2: USB Headset

Looking at USB headset control box. You can see that the microphone wire is furthest from the volume controls.

Use a small screw driver to pop the top of the control box; we’re going to add a one quarter inch mono input plug.

Step 3: Wiring

Strip the end of the single wire inside and twist together the braided shield like this.

And then, solder the single wire and the braided wire to the pc board inside the control box as shown in this diagram.

Here’s how it looks from a different angle.

Step 4: Cover

Now all that’s left is to adapt the cover to accommodate the one quarter inch jackwire and then snap the cover back into place.

And that’s all there is to it. It’s done.

Now you can plug in any type of instrument or microphone that uses a quarter inch jack. And enjoy digital quality in your recording using your USB headset. Have fun and thanks for watching.
