I'm going to hold the spirit level on the front of the brickwork, and on the face of the brickwork to ensure all the bricks touch the spirit level. I will knock it until the bubble is in the middle of the black line.
I'm going to do that at both ends, and at this end too. The bricks are not that level until the bubble is right in the middle.

Use The Level

As I'm holding the level on the face of the brickwork making sure that both bricks touch the level, and then I can check that the bubble is in the middle of the black lines.
Both bricks touch, the bubble is in the middle, it's upright.
As we can see, I've uprighted there and the level doesn't quite touch, so that tells me this brick needs a little adjustment. So adjust the brick until all the bricks touch the level.
