If you're using Lotus Notes (poor you) you might be able to catch the mail before it replicates (synchronises) with the mail server, by pulling out the network cable. Saved my Bacon once!

Always be friends with the network administrators/BOfH in your company. Not only will it make your life easier in general, but they could well be able to save your bacon in a time like this. Treat them with the respect they deserve, they are the most important people in your office!
