What To Look For When Buying Chickens
Buying a chicken can be a tricky business. Know what to look for with Susie Baldwin's expert tips on what to look for when choosing and buying chickens.
What to look for when buying chickens? Now, number one, make sure you like the place, make sure they are kept well, and it's nice and clean, and they have food and water. Make sure the chickens are looking happy, check your bird over, look for clear eyes, nice shaped beak, we don't like de-beaking, there's no need for it. If they're kept with enough space and entertainment, they should have lovely cones and mottles.
They're feathering should be healthy and shiny, they're legs should be nice and smooth, and they should be active and looking happy. Make sure you're happy with the people running it, that you get on with them and they're happy to offer telephone advice ? it's a bonus, it just gives you the confidence to go away and actually look after your charges without having to worry ?what if? because there on the end of the phone, any good poultry keeper would be happy to offer free help and advice. Another thing to look for in your young chickens is they should never have any discharge coming from their nostrils or any puffiness or mucus coming out of their eyes ? it's a sign of something called mycoplasma, it is quite contagious and once you have got it within your flock, it is very difficult to get rid of.
Another thing as well is if you are looking in the pen, observe the chickens for while - any sneezing is normally an indication of a respiratory problem. When you choose your girl and you are doing your checks, just hold it to your ear and listen to its chest, you can hear its heart racing, there should never be any signs of crackling or congestion of the lung. And that is what to look for when buying chickens. .
