What To Wear For Tennis
VideoJug and world class tennis player and coach Ruben Mayo are here to help you decide what to wear for tennis. From sweatbands to tennis shoes, this film has it all.
Step 1: Dress code
It's a good idea to check the clothing regulations at the club where you're playing.
There are no rules about the colours you wear. You certainly don't have to restrict your choices to whites unless you're playing the Championships, Wimbledon .
Most clubs follow these guidelines: players must wear a t-shirt at all times. They must also wear tennis shoes so as not to damage the courts. And players must wear sports clothes.
Step 2: Time to shop
When selecting your clothes choose durable items that will feel comfortable to wear.
Choose loose attire for comfort, but don't select clothes that are too big as that will impair your movement.
Fabrics should be soft, natural material, like cotton, to absorb sweat.
Tennis shorts should be loose and comfortable, and pockets are a must for storing a second ball when serving.
Women often wear shorts, but tennis skirts and dresses are also available. They should be short enough to allow complete freedom of movement.
Step 3: Head gear
A peaked cotton cap will keep your head cool and the sun out of your eyes.
White is a good choice in warm climates, as it reflects the heat.
Step 4: Footwear
The right tennis shoes must be comfortable, with the upper part offering flexibility as well as support.
Non-marking soles are a must. Rubber soles are designed to give maximum grip on the court.
Tip: Don't wear running shoes or trainers as these are not designed for lateral movement.
The best socks are made of cotton or towelling to absorb sweat and are thick on the foot area to prevent blisters.
An optional extra are wrist bands. They are made of cotton and absorb sweat. This keeps the handle of your racket dry and your grip firm.
Now that you know what to wear - you're ready to play tennis, the VideoJug way!
