Why Students Get Sick - And How To Stop It
VideoJug user MarshallBenjamin, enlists the expertise of Dr Carrie Ruxton to help students understand why they get sick, and how to stop. Follow these simple recommendations and you'll be fighting fit in no time.
-
Step 1:
-
Student lifestyle:
-
Student life; three years of conscientious studying and healthy living...
That was certainly the way things were when I was at college, but I'm told by my youthful friends that things have changed! And new stats support this shocking theory...
-
Step 2:
-
Healthcare:
-
Firstly, boozing and partying -- the research from Tesco Healthcare shows that 40% of students are drunk the equivalent of a month per year, 11% get drunk three times a week or more, and the same amount only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep per night. And food -- 14% eat only one balanced meal once a week, and 10% manage two balanced meals a week.
Now, unsurprisingly a diet of booze and bad food doesn't really do you any favors. Dr. Carrie Ruxton is a nutrition expert on BBC-3's "Honey, We're Killing the Kids", and she's been looking at the results.
Dr. Carrie Ruxton:"Life for students nowadays is all about drinking too much, not having very many balanced meals, skipping breakfast and really having quite a bad diet. Very few of them know how to cook. And the effect this is having is that it can definitely affect concentration levels, which for a student is vital, and it could have a long-term effect on health in terms of immune function and the risk of diseases later on in life."
-
Step 3:
-
Saving our students.
-
So, how can we save our students from themselves? They are after all the future leaders of this country. Surely there must be a ray of hope shining through this alcoholic haze.
Dr. Carrie Ruxton:"A lot of students want to make changes to their diet. They know what they should be doing, but they have difficulty putting it into practice. What they could try is aiming for five a day fruit and vegetables, eating breakfast every day and of course having regular meals. They might also want to look at supplementing their diets with vitamins and minerals, and these are very cheap from retailers such as Tesco, and can help them really make up the deficit in these unbalanced diets."

Step 4:
-
Research:
-
So, thankfully, students will not only survive, but thrive, if they take Dr. Carrie's advice, and this has got to be a good thing. I suppose the next step is to find out how a diet of booze and bad food affects the older generation, like me. I'm prepared to conduct this research.
