"they should have used heliun insted of hydrogen" Sadly the Americans were busy running a Helium Embargo on Germany. I wonder why? Not wanting to get conspirital I will stop here.

This thing went up quick. If you watch the larger screen movies of this you can actually see people jumping from the center and nose section as it burned to the ground. They've made movies about this since the newsreel..there were many theories as to what caused this. Sabotage (bomb/spy), a spark, weather/lightning. Helium was much harder to come by in Europe, not to mention it is a heavier gas than hydrogen, which was capable of greater lift and lighter=speed... so he Germans stuck with Hydrogen. As you can see...this was not a safe or prudent idea.. but it was they had used for decades prior. Not sure if it a decision of arrogance much like Titanic and her unsinkable stature going out to sea w/o adequate lifeboats or just lulled into a comfort of security with the size of the ship. The Capt of the Hindenburg during this momentous voyage was a very experienced Zeppelin pilot if I recall.
