first, no matter what whoever gives the bottle must relax. it gets extrememly frustrating quick.
Lots of tricks, walk with baby, bounce baby, rock baby, sing, talk, show the tv... anything to distract the baby. once they are distracted, slip the bottle in. my baby would start sucking, then realize it wasn't mom and spit the nipple out.
You can try to try to slip the nipple in when the baby is really sleepy, as in just waking up. first thing in the morning seems to be the best. Another thing you can do is breastfeed for a bit and before the baby is completley satisfied give the bottle. the thought is that the baby won't be frantically hungry.
On the other hand, remember the baby WILL eat if they get hungry enough. At one point, after days and days of rejecting a bottle for my husband, my baby got hungry enough to suck down 6 oz in one sitting (12 weeks old at that point).
its a long process. one of my freinds actually had to hold the baby tightly and almost force the bottle on. .thankfully I never got to that point. It took two weeks of both my husband and my mother in law giving the baby a bottle while I was at work. On my off days I would still try a bottle, with no luck. My mother in law was able to coax the baby to finally take the bottle.
the thing is, the baby won't take a bottle from you, why would s/he- they know there is a better source!
