My old horse was 19 and because it had to rest of injured foot i brought it back walking 20 minutes a 1-2 times a day, after a few weeks you can add a bit longer and a bit of canter, you probably mite think that it isn't doing anything but believe you me a good ten minute bending streching topline work it will better than going cantering round the feilds for half an hour !! ~There like us in a way we cant just go into flat out work all of a sudden when our bodies arn't used to it thats why 20 mins twice a day will help build up the muscle and the fitness level !!! but make sure you take each step in long periods .. the more patient you be the better turnout and even 20 minutes 1 a day would be a start and if you don't have that much times every day a week get a friend on the yard to lunge work in walk and trot the days you cant do ; possibly get a sharer!! ALso something to keep your mind ctive its a really good way to improve your riding i.e. position or working it on a outline in walk which will create the correct build-up of the correct muscles.keep up night feeds as will need the extra boost but just a base all in one feed as you don't want him going barmey i.e. happy hoof, has some suppliments bit of garlic all in oner really .nuts and chaff. hope i've helped. Chloe

you have to do it slowly as otherwise he will hurt himself. I would first start by hacking him out for a short time at a walk and increase the time you work him then have a trot and eventually you will be able to ride in an arena or menarge and do canter work.
