If a person cannot function without legal or illegal drugs. In some cases physicians hook patients on pain meds, that should only be used for acute pain over a short period of time. These meds lose their effectiveness quickly, but the person is still hooked. Marijuana is addictive, and harmful if overused, as is alcohol, and tobacco. You're an addict if you can't function normally in the absence of a particular substance. Like, if you run out of cornflakes you're annoyed but you can still go to work and get on with your friends. But if you run out of coffee, cigarettes or heroin and you can't leave the house or think or interact normally then you're addicted. Addiction usually comes to the party accompanied by it's best friend, denial. To be sure of the level of your addiction you need the input of someone objective because it's almost certain you've become addcited as the result of telling yourself a load of lies.

Depends on the drug(s) and the person, just remember that many people can and do live within and contribute to society with drug habits, a heroin "addict", for example can live a happy and fulfilling life while still taking heroin. Most of the problems with drugs are due to prohibition, artifically high prices driving people to crime, people with drug convictions being unable to work, contaminants are the most dangerous things in most drugs nowadays, some cannabis even has silica beads sandblasted into it to boost the weight, this causes silicosis and soapbar (cheap pressed hash) has more plastic bags, coffee, oil and henna in than real cannabis. Cannabis, Ecstacy and LSD among other drugs are less dangerous than the worlds 2 favourite legal drugs so inform yourself before taking rash action

They would rather hang out with their druggy friends than you.

If a person cannot make it without having that need satisfied. If you can't forget about your need.

If a person needs to have a particular habit satisfied. Otherwise, the person can go through withdrawals.
