I use a free program called ScaleTrainer http://www.ecogneato.com/products/stge/stge_bv_product.html that samples my guitar through my computers sound card. It shows my whats right and wrong for a (scale/mode/key combination), then I just mess around on the guitar until I find something that sounds good and then I layer parts with a four track. Its a great hobby, I've been doing it for years. Since I hate tabs and can't afford lessons so this is a great alternative.

Begin acoustic with the best affordable guitar and best affordable light steel strings - with a spare set to hand. Be sure you learn acoustic tuning by ear, and then practice over and over at least 3 open chords so that the your finger pads harden and you are fluent in changing from one chord to another. I suggest open chords D, C , G , & and then the more difficult F major. After that, go to barre chords . . . and decide to be better than anyone.
