Here is what to do. You can use a computer, or you can write it by hand- but if you do this make sure it is clear and easy to read. DEAR and SIGNING OFF If it is a business letter to someone you do not know, begin 'Dear Sir/ Madam', and sign off 'Yours faithfully'. If it is a letter to someone you have met, or spoken to on the phone, then open with 'Dear Mr......' and sign off 'Yours sincerely'. If it is a personal, informal letter then you can write 'Dear David', or 'Dear Michelle', and not worry about their last name. Likewise, you can sign off 'Best Wishes' or 'Regards' or 'Love from' ADDRESS But before this, you need to make sure,l personal or business letter, that you put your own address in the top right hand corner of the letter, including the postcode or sip, and a phone number or email. If it is a business letter, under this on the left hand side of the page, but before the 'Dear' you should also include their address (but not their postcode email, and phone number.) FIRST SENTENCE Always open your letter with a sentence that orientates the reader and/or sets out why you are writing. So if it soemone you have met before, but ages ago, you might want to remind them of who you are, when you met and go on to explain your reason for writing, like so: Dear Mr Eagle, You might remember that we met six years ago in the bar of the Hotel California, where we had a long conversation about it being a lovely place, but very difficult to leave. Well, after six years I am still here, and wondered if you had any advice on how I could leave. After this, you can finish it off anway you like, adding the appropriate ending above. If you are writing a love letter, then watch this....
