Ps - re the answer below: You could also write the final figure as 7" 6/8 or 7 6/8 inches. If your measurement falls exactly on a half inch you would write 7" 1/2 or 7 1/2 inches.

Hi, A twelve inch (12") ruler is divided into inches, 1/2 (half) inches and 1/8 (eighth) inches. The inches are indicated by the longest marks and a number. The half inch marks are slightly shorter and fall exactly half way between the inch marks, without numbers. The smallest marks are the eighth inches. The total length of the ruler is 1 foot (ft) - 1ft = 12". To measure a straight line, place the ruler alongside it, with the "0" at the start of the line. Read the number immediately before the end of the line. This is the nearest inch. If the line runs on beyond that number, count the number of eighth lines until the end of the line. This will give you the measurement, for example: 7 inches and 6 eighths. You should write this as 7" 6. Hope that helps! Chris at VideoJug.
