You will need to knit on more than one needle when you are using many different colored yarn. Making argyle socks is one use of many needles because of the many different colors involved. You will need the two pointed end smaller needles to do this. Knit on the two needles until the pattern says to add a color. you would increase a stitch with the new color. Knit that color using the two pointed needle for as many stiches needed. When doing this, make sure that you first push the stitches on the regular needles away from the end so they do not fall off the needle. Knit with the smaller needle , following the pattern. When finished, push the stitches into the center, and allow the needle to dangle freely, as you pick up the regular needles and continue . When the pattern says to use the other color, do the same thing.let go of one of the larger needles and stitch with the larger and smaller one according to pattern. When a third color is needed so the same thing. Use another empty two pointed end needle . When you stop knitting for the evening. wrap small rubber bands around the two pointed needles that are hanging, so the yarn does not fall off. It takes some concentration, but once you get the colors in place, it is easy....But you must follow the pattern or you will mix up the colors needed.

It looks difficult but it's really not, I promise. The difference is that instead of knitting back and forth, like you usually do, you knit round and round. Ask the people in your local yarn store to show you.
