London is a great city with so much to see and do, you would find it hard to fit everything in, in a 2 week holiday so you would most likely come again! Majority of tourists only focus around central london and take advice from tour guides who are only after their money. Some shops, restaurants in these areas charge extortionate prices for everything, which is why tourists think London is expensive. Londoners rarely venture to these places as they couldnt afford to. If you did come to visit, you should stay in hotels on the outskirts which are no more than 15-20 minute metro ride away and you will pay local prices and save yourself a fortune, rather than be ripped off left, right and centre! London is a multiculteral city and the minimum wage is £5.65p an hour. Retail staff, restaurant workers and most unskilled earn either this or not much more. Rent is expensive, more children stay with parents for longer now due to the difficulty in being able to afford to buy their own home as mortgages are around 10 times their annual salary. The goverment provide housing for single parent, the unwaged, elderley and vunerable people. The weekly amount somebody out of work recieves is £75 excluding rent which is paid. The hours worked are normally 40 per week. They have just raised the school leaving age to 18yrs as to many kids were leaving school with little propects due to lack of qualifications, leading to higher crime rates and more unemployment. There are many opportunities to be had though. Immigration is high with most recently an influx of Polish migrants arriving working for so little, pricing the skilled British builders etc out of the job market. Generally people are more reserved than in the US. Manners are diminishing though! School starts at 9am - 3.30pm with an hour for lunch and 2 breaks in between. Most people like to take at least a 2 week yearly break, more often than not abroad on a family holiday each year. London is no less safe than any other major city. Chilren travel free on London transport. People are getting lazier, often opting to eat convenience foods or take outs leading to a rise in child obesity.Theres not much of a class system you get treated the same generally whether you are a bank manager or a refuse worker and have the same sort of lifesyle. Thats not to say there arent "snooty" areas, but even still working class can still enjoy most of what they have exept the big mansion and private education!
