Amber is so right... I will now make fun of her. I realized that my list above (here comes some cheating..) only had bands. solo artists off the top of my head: van morrison, sam cooke, nick drake, otis redding, josh rouse, prince, elliott smith, louis armstrong, elvis ...everly brothers (cheating again) Amber, I'll come make fun of you in person.

This leaves out some indispensables, but here goes: Sam Cooke, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Pavement, Pearl Jam, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Shearwater/Okkervil River, Sleater-Kinney. Honorable childhood mention to Iron Maiden and Metallica.
