What Can I Do If My Cat Is Depressed?

I recently got a cat. She unfortunately had to go from outdoor to indoor cat. Now I think she might be depressed. I heard somewhere that I should keep her indoors for 3 months and then start letting her out slowly. Problem is that we live in a flat and the windows are only on the one side and there is no way that she can get out from there as we are on the 6th floor and the drop is straight down. What should I do? She has enough toys. We play with her when we get home in the afternoon. She is also getting fat. I only feed her science diet and few dried fishies for treats. She does tricks.

ok, it's official. Pix is very happy, she's been doing well. Has lots of toys and plays all around the house. She only uses her litter box and scratches only her scratch pole. So I think we will be okey. Thanks for all the responses and help...

Yip, she is definitely getting fat... She is on the Indoor Science diet. I give her exercise by letting her run up and down the stairs after her toy... like I said.. she loves to play catch. ;)

Cats do not adapt well to suddenly being forced indoors all the time. Most rescue centres will not home a cat into an environment which goes against the cat's usual lifestyle. I have 5 cats at the moment, all from kittens and all housecats and they are very happy. I once took in a cat from a friend and tried to keep him in, but he did everything he could to get back out. I doubt your cat will ever be content inside when she knows what is out there. After all, cats are wild by nature and you should only keep them inside if they know no different. She will get fat, you should reduce the amount you feed her because diet advice on packaging is based on active animals, and housecats aren't. I struggle to manage my cats weight's because some are worse than others and having five it is impossible to feed them all seperate. You just have to think they don't need all that food when they're hardly exercising.

I think you're doing the right thing by playing with her. Maybe some cuddling too. ;) But I think you should ask your vet - they'll probably be able to help you.

Thanks a lot Anon... we do play with her a lot. She likes to play fetch. I just think that maybe she really misses the outside world.

Play with her. No need for fancy toys, just get a piece of thin rope and maybe tie a used collar at the end of it, and drag it around the flat, it'll be fun for both of you.
