ODD is beyond a person just being "a jerk". I teach students with ODD (aptly named, yes?) so my experience is mainly with teenagers. In a nutshell - the most significant characteristic I see is that they want what they want, they will do just about anything to get it and don't care about other people's reactions or feelings. They can be passive/aggressive, lie like a rug, turn on tears for the sympathy vote, be argumentative (beyond "normal" teens) and are usually first class manipulators. They typically do what you DON'T want them to do, or they don't do what you DO want them to do. They don't consistently buy into incentives or rewards, nor do they seem to care too much about negative consequences. Because of this, it can be hard to modify their behavior. The one thing I have found to be most effective in dealing with kids/teens with behavior issues is to form a relationship with them, a connection. (not to be confused with SLEEPING with them, despite what some teachers seem to think!! lol) Kids don't care what you have to say unless they know that you care about them. It may sound cliche, but that's how it is. Hope my dissertation helps!
