It is offensive and ridiculous to eat with the aid of a spoon. In Italy you'll never even see children attempt that. However, food should be enjoyed, and etiquette or not, everyone should do what works best for them. HEre's a tip though, to ease into the correct way: try to make a little bit of room on your plate by gracefully trying to push all the pasta to one side with your fork, so you can see the bottom of your plate, then use the bottom of the plate as you would a spoon.

I don't use a spoon--I just twirl with the fork pointed down not quite touching the bottom of the plate. That works as well...and no spoon to clean :P

Actually the correct way of eating spaghetti is without thespoon. It is regarded to be of very bad table manner to use the spoon to aid twirling ( if you could use this terminology) the spaghetti around the fork. keep on practicing, it is very easy.

place your fork into the pasta and twirl slowly with a dessert spoon to aid the lifting into your mouth... and repest
