I use a free program called ScaleTrainer http://www.ecogneato.com/products/stge/stge_bv_product.html that samples my guitar through my computers sound card. It shows my whats right and wrong for a (scale/mode/key combination), then I just mess around on the guitar until I find something that sounds good and then I layer parts with a four track. Its a great hobby, I've been doing it for years. Since I hate tabs and can't afford lessons so this is a great alternative.

there isnt an easy way to learn an instrument properly. it takes years of practice to fully learn guitar. you need to think about if youre committed enough to put in that effort

Also another point, alot of tabs will not show you the exact strumming pattern of a particular song, i know it sounds rather laborious but often the best way is to listen to the song and work it out for yourself, rather than relying on someone else's interpretation of the song.

Well you get a pleck if you want.. then you strum the strings not too hard thought or it will sound silly. its you're on an electric guitar i advise you not to strum, cause it will sound worse than playing 3 or 4 notes.. and stuff.. i dunno i cant be bothered to tell you...
