A Quick Guide To Digital Cameras

Mark Comon (Vice President, Paul's Photo, Torrance, CA) gives expert video advice on: What is the most important thing to know about digital cameras?; What do I need to know before buying a digital camera?

What is the most important thing to know about digital cameras?

The first thing that I want from my customers is: what do you want to use the camera for? The more homework you can do yourself, not on what camera, what features, what megapixels, but how you want to use the camera, what expectations you have, what budget you have. Share that with your camera counselor. Share that with your camera store person. Like I said before, my job is to listen to my customers, and help them buy a digital camera. I know all the cameras and my job is to fit the perfect camera to meet your needs. You don't go to the shoe store saying, "I want that shoe in this size." You pick the style you want and let the shoe salesman fit the shoe for you. My job is to fit the camera for you. So you tell me what you want to do, what kind of pictures you want to take, do you want a small camera or a big camera, do you want to spend two hundred, five hundred, a thousand, three thousand dollars. Then let me do my job, and give you two solid recommendations that you can then pick from.

What do I need to know before buying a digital camera?

What do I need to know? You need to decide, do I want a small camera or the big camera? Do I want a Pocket camera, or one with all the features? One of the things I'll tell you is; buy as many megapixels as you are comfortable with. Don't look at the digital zoom, optical zoom only, and then decide pocket camera or SLR. If you're buying SLR, look at one of the names you're comfortable with. Buy as good a lens as you can afford. The better lenses make better pictures. On the compact cameras find something that fits in your hand, that you can see; that you're comfortable with. Buy a name you trust and find something that takes a standard memory card, for God's sake. Don't buy a funky memory card. Compact flash, SD memory cards; they're the best way to go. They're going to be with us for a long time. Have a good time. Make beautiful pictures with your digital camera and don't be afraid to call me when you need help or you need a new camera. I'll always be here to help you.
