Adoption From Overseas
Alan Platt (Director) gives expert video advice on: If I adopt from overseas, will the child need a visa?; Will my adopted child receive automatic British citizenship?; How long can an adopted child stay in the UK?
If I adopt from overseas, will the child need a visa?
If you adopt a child from overseas and the child obviously is a foreign national then you would need to apply for a visa at the British Embassy or British High Commission and you would need to show legal documents to show that you had adopted the child.
Will my adopted child receive automatic British citizenship?
Whether your child receives British citizenship or not depends upon the immigration status of the person adopting the child. If the child is adopted by a British citizen and comes to live in the United Kingdom, then the child can become a British citizen.
How long can an adopted child stay in the UK?
An adopted child can stay in the United Kingdom indefinitely. There is no restriction upon the time limit of an adopted child providing the parents or parent of that adopted child is settled in the United Kingdom.
