Amateur Circuit Skateboarding
Tony Alva (Pro Skateboarder) gives expert video advice on: How do I achieve amateur status in the skateboard world?; What types of contests are there for amateur skateboarders?; How did you qualify for skateboarding contests? and more...
What types of contests are there for amateur skateboarders?
Just local ones at the different skate parks, as well as maybe like parks and recreation places, stuff like that. My first contest that I skated in was in Santa Monica at Lincoln Park, it was right there on the basketball court. You know, and I entered that contest and I kind of got the bug and I was all like, 'wow'.
How did you qualify for skateboarding contests?
Well, I had to qualify by skateboarding through the amateur ranks until I was sixteen years of age. Once I was sixteen, it was more about an age thing, but I had already won everything I could win in the juniors.
What type of money can an amateur skateboarder make?
Amateur skateboarding is not geared around money. It's just geared around sponsorship which would come with maybe boards and t-shirts and wheels, and just all the accoutrements that it takes to be a skateboarder. And maybe occasionally you will win trips or get trophies or stuff like that.
