Anal Fissure
What is an "anal fissure"?
Anal fissure is a condition where a tear or cut takes place at the border between the rectum and the anus or the opening to the rectum. This cut or this tear can be severely painful, can potentially cause bleeding, and definitely cause a lot of discomfort and agony.
How is an anal fissure diagnosed?
An anal fissure is usually diagnosed by a physical examination; an examination through anoscopy which gives us the tool to evaluate the lining of the anus and the rectum. Potentially, endoscopic manoeuvres, by using a camera with a light source, may need to be performed in order to further evaluate this lining.
What is the treatment for an anal fissure?
The treatment for anal fissures is generally similar to the treatment for haemorrhoids. They centre on keeping the bowel movements soft and regular by increasing daily fluid and fibre intake, but generally what helps are medications that are used topically in the area to decrease inflammation and promote healing. In its more severe form, if medical management cannot appropriately treat and improve these fissures, surgery may need to be performed for long-term treatment.
