Art Collecting
What kind of art should I be buying to start a collection?
It depends on the level of your budget, it depends on what you're interested in, in terms of aesthetically and conceptually, and all of those factors vary. So it just truly depends on those points. If somebody's interested in building a very serious collection, then we would say okay, start with established artists, or if somebody's interested in following what's happening now and following young artists, we'd say point them that direction. It just varies really on budget and aesthetics.
Do particular types of art sell better than others?
Obviously if things can hang easily on the wall, it's much easier than sculpture. Sculpture tends to be hard to place. Not everybody has loads of floor space, but everybody has walls. It tends to be easier to sell paintings or photographs or works - two dimensional works. Three dimensional works, which is what our specialty is, tend to be much harder to place. But, on the other hand, ours can be much more exciting.
Can I buy work straight from an artist?
That is becoming harder and harder. In the past you probably could, but these days artists from the moment they're out of college are picked up by galleries, so it's becoming very difficult. But I'm sure some artists do sell from the studio.
Where is the best place to discover emerging artists?
I would suggest going to degree shows and going to the major international BNRs like Istanbul, Venice, Documenta, and Munster, where you tend to see emerging, undiscovered talent.
