Baseball Equipment

What is a 'bat' in baseball?

A baseball bat is a wooden or aluminium instrument that is used to hit the baseball from the pitcher.

What is a 'baseball'?

A baseball is the chief component of the game of baseball. It's what you use to be thrown from the pitcher to the hitter; it's what's put in play. The baseball is the key to baseball itself.

Are all the bases the same size and design in baseball?

The bases in baseball are setup to where first base, second base, and third base are all the same. They're actually called bags. Home plate is actually a plate. It's actually different, as far as shape goes, and it's also level to the ground, where the bags are above the ground.

What are the essential pieces of equipment that a baseball player needs?

The essential pieces of equipment that a baseball player needs are; a ball, so they can play, and a bat, for the hitting team. Also to participate in baseball you will also need gloves; any position player on defense needs a glove to catch the ball.

What factors should I consider when picking out my baseball bat?

The factors you should consider are your size, how old you are, and how strong you are. And depending upon, really, how strong you are, you would get a slightly heavier bat and a slightly longer bat. So the older you get in the game, the longer the bat tends to get and the heavier it tends to get.

Why do some baseball leagues have wooden bats and others have aluminum bats?

Some baseball leagues have wooden bats and some baseball leagues have aluminium bats mainly due to cost and prices. Aluminium bats will last a long time, and therefore you don't have to keep buying wood bats. Wood bats can break on one pitch, and can be very costly. A second reason is safety, which really should be the first reason. The safety concern is this: with an aluminium bat, the ball will tend to come off the bat much faster, and will literally make it dangerous for the pitcher. A wooden bat doesn't quite have the speed coming off of it, so safety is really a second reason why.

What factors should I consider when purchasing my baseball glove?

The factors you should consider when purchasing a glove are two-fold. The first is cost, because you can buy a great glove that's a professional model that's maybe two to three hundred dollars. You can buy a similar glove that the quality is not too far off and it's maybe $50. But the point is that it still has to be something comfortable to you. So it really just depends on the feel of when you put your hand in the glove, how does it feel? Obviously, if you're an outfielder you want an outfielder's glove; which is bigger. If you're a catcher, you have a glove that is designed completely different. If you're a first baseman, you have an unusually long glove for scooping balls that are in the dirt from the infielder, so a lot of it depends on your position and a lot of it depends on the comfort and then of course, the price.

How can I 'break in' my new baseball glove?

The way you break in your baseball glove, there's some really old traditional ways of doing it. One is just simple glove oil you can buy at any sporting goods stores and usually you just kind of rub the oil through the pocket of the glove and maybe certain parts of the glove that you feel need to bend the way you want the glove to bend. Some old things that I did, I put three baseballs in the glove so it kind of created a nice pocket and then I would just tie, you know, a string around it or a rope. You can actually take the glove and just put it underneath your bed, put a few balls in it and again shape it. So there's some really old school ways, and then there's just basically get some glove oil and just kind of rub it in there.

How can I keep my baseball glove looking and feeling like new?

There's a few ways to keep your baseball glove looking and feeling like new. One would be take care of it, obviously when you're done playing with it make sure it gets in your equipment bag, or you can even have a big plastic bag to put it in. Some players actually can buy this piece of equipment that forms to the shape of your glove and then has Velcro that goes around the glove. A third thing is just to be smart. If you toss your glove in the dugout, you toss it in the dirt and it's going to get beat up, so just be aware of some basic things like that.

What equipment do I need to wear in order to be safe on the baseball field?

The equipment that you would need to wear to be safe on a baseball field is, number one, a protective cup for the groin area. It's very, very important. All players should wear it at all levels. Number two for a safe in baseball is a batting helmet. Obviously you want to protect your head from the blow of the baseball. When the baseball's thrown at speeds up to 90 miles an hour or more, it can be very dangerous. Number three, specifically for a catcher, he needs a lot of equipment, including shin guard, chest protector, and of course, face mask to protect the face.

What is a 'batting helmet' in baseball?

A batting helmet is something that goes on your head. It has some foam and cushioning in there. It's made out of some form of very hard plastic. The idea, of course, is that if the ball hits it, its going to ricochet off it and absorb the blow.

What factors should I consider when picking out my batting helmet for baseball?

The factors you should consider when buying a batting helmet for baseball, number one is safety. Some helmets are made to wear, they are just not as sturdy. You can tell that the plastic isn't as strong. You want to find a batting helmet where you feel protected and you feel the plastic is strong. Number two to consider when buying a batting helmet for baseball is of course, comfort. You want to find a helmet that fits well, and isn't too tight and isn't too big.

What sort of gear does the 'catcher' need for a baseball game?

The kind of gear a catcher needs for a base ball game are: Number one, shin guards, number two, a chest protector, number three, a protective helmet for his head and number four, a face mask; and then as i said earlier, all players need a protective cup.

What are the basic elements of a baseball uniform?

The basic elements of a baseball uniform are the sensitory socks and the stirrups. They go over the socks, the baseball pants, baseball belt, and some form of a baseball top. This is all part of the uniform. Some players like to wear sleeves when it's a little cool, and you can also get the baseball hat.

What are 'batting gloves' in baseball?

Batting gloves are worn by hitters so they have a good grip on the bat. A lot of times, players will feel like they don't have a good feel. Because they can actually use gloves and put some sticky stuff called Pine Tar on their hands, it gives them a better grip on the bat.
